The Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences, Universitas Indonesia (FMIPA UI), is exploring a collaboration with the Regional Public Drinking Water Company Jaya (PAM JAYA) in the field of water research and technology development to support the improvement of clean water services in Jakarta. The exploratory discussion was held in a meeting on Monday, 19 January 2026, at the FMIPA UI Faculty Administration Center in Depok.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The Dean of FMIPA UI, Prof. Dr. Tito Latif Indra, M.Si., stated that this collaboration is expected to generate applicable scientific solutions to water management challenges. \u201cFMIPA UI has strong scientific and technological expertise. Through collaboration with PAM JAYA, we aim to ensure that the outcomes of research and community service can be implemented in real terms to address clean water management challenges, ranging from process efficiency to the development of sustainable technologies,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The collaboration initiated by FMIPA UI encompasses the development of research and community service with a focus on applicable technical solutions. Both parties emphasized the importance of clearly defined collaborative objectives, including the determination of activity outputs, the division of roles in accordance with the main duties and functions of each institution, as well as the mutual benefits to be gained.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
A number of strategic issues became the focus of the discussion, including the control of Non-Revenue Water (NRW), the development of integrated water-based optimal zones (ZOBAT), the implementation of nature-based solutions, and innovations in water purifier technology. The collaboration is also directed toward improving energy efficiency and reducing chemical usage in water treatment processes, the application of smart water concepts, and efforts to control leakage rates in order to reduce production costs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The Senior Manager for Research & Development and Innovation (R&DI) of PAM JAYA, Nur Djamaluddin, emphasized the importance of collaboration with universities in driving innovation in clean water services. \u201cAs a technical institution, PAM JAYA requires science-based research and innovation support. Collaboration with FMIPA UI is expected to help us identify effective and efficient solutions, particularly in reducing leakage rates, improving water treatment quality, and addressing the challenges of raw water availability in Jakarta,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
In addition to discussing medium- and long-term collaboration plans, PAM JAYA also expressed its commitment to donate two units of water purifiers to FMIPA UI. The handover is scheduled to take place in conjunction with the FMIPA UI Anniversary (Dies Natalis) celebration, which will be held on Saturday, 24 January 2026. This support is expected to serve as an initial step in the collaboration while also providing direct benefits to the FMIPA UI academic community.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
During the meeting, both parties also agreed that the collaboration would not be directed toward the formulation of regulations, considering that PAM JAYA functions as a technical institution rather than a regulator. Therefore, the collaboration will focus on developing research-based solutions that address practical, field-level needs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The exploratory meeting was also attended by members of the FMIPA UI leadership, including Prof. Anom Bowolaksono, Ph.D., Vice Dean for Education, Research, and Student Affairs, and Prof. Dr. Ivandini Tribidasari Anggraningrum, S.Si., M.Si., Vice Dean for Resources, Ventures, and General Administration.
