The Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences (FMIPA) at Universitas Indonesia (UI) has once again achieved an accomplishment on the international stage. A total of seven fields of study have been included in the QS World University Rankings by Subject 2026, an increase from the previous year, which only covered five fields.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
In last year\u2019s ranking, within the narrow subject category Natural Sciences<\/em>s, Geography is ranked 101\u2013150, Mathematics is ranked 451\u2013500, Physics and Astronomy is ranked 501\u2013550, and Chemistry is ranked 551\u2013600. Meanwhile, in the group Life Sciences & Medicine<\/em>, Biological Sciences was ranked 501\u2013550.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Entering 2026, several ranking changes occurred. Geography is ranked 151\u2013200, while Mathematics and Chemistry remain in their respective positions at 451\u2013500 and 551\u2013600. Meanwhile, Physics and Astronomy has improved to the 401\u2013450 range. The field of Biological Sciences also remains at 501\u2013550.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Not only that, two new fields within the Natural Sciences category have also entered this year\u2019s rankings, namely Environmental Sciences at 451\u2013600 and Materials Science at 401\u2013550. This addition further strengthens UI\u2019s position as the only university in Indonesia to have entered five broad subjects in the QS WUR 2026.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The Dean of FMIPA UI, Prof. Dr. Tito Latif Indra, M.Si., stated that this achievement is the result of continuous collaboration and dedication from the entire FMIPA UI academic community.<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cThis achievement is certainly the result of a long journey of efforts from the entire academic community. Therefore, we appreciate all parties\u2014from leadership, lecturers, researchers, and education staff to students\u2014for their hard work, synergy, and contributions,\u201d said Prof. Tito.<\/p>\n\n\n\n He hopes that this momentum will not only be a moment of pride, but also serve as a sustained driver for the entire academic community to continue strengthening a culture of innovation, expanding cross-disciplinary collaboration and global partnerships, and consistently enhancing the quality and impact of the implementation of the university\u2019s tridharma (education, research, and community service).<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cWe hope this achievement can serve as a catalyst for the entire academic community to continue innovating, strengthening collaboration, and improving the quality of the implementation of the university\u2019s tridharma,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The 2026 edition of the QS World University Rankings by Subject covers 55 specific subjects across five broad subject areas and is the largest to date, involving more than 1,900 institutions worldwide, including over 300 institutions that have entered the rankings for the first time. The South Asia region recorded the highest percentage increase in universities compared to the previous year, while East Asia contributed the largest number of newly ranked institutions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The assessment in this ranking is based on several key indicators that reflect the academic quality and global competitiveness of higher education institutions. Academic reputation is measured through the perceptions of academics worldwide regarding the excellence of institutions and their study programs. In addition, employer reputation is derived from global companies\u2019 evaluations of the quality of graduates produced.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The citations per publication metric is calculated using data from Elsevier Scopus to assess research impact, while the H-index is used to measure the productivity and influence of scholarly work. In addition, international research networks serve as an important indicator in evaluating an institution\u2019s ability to build sustainable global collaborations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Overall, QS compiles data from approximately 16.4 million academic publications and engages more than 151,000 academics and 100,000 employers worldwide.
