Depok, October 12, 2026 \u2014 Sustainable waste management can begin with simple habits at home, including sorting waste at its source, starting in the kitchen. To encourage these practices, the Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences, Universitas Indonesia (FMIPA UI), through its Department of Biology, invited residents of RW 03, Sukmajaya Subdistrict, Depok, to apply the 3R principles (Reduce, Reuse, Recycle<\/em>) in household waste management.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This initiative was carried out through a community service program entitled \u201cCommunity Empowerment for Sustainable Household Waste Management through the Implementation of the 3R Principles (Reduce, Reuse, Recycle<\/em>),\u201d held on September 12, 2026, at the RW 03 Integrated Health Service Post (Posyandu) in Sukmajaya Subdistrict, Depok.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The activity was led by Dr. Oriza Savitri Ariantie, M.Si., Head of the FMIPA UI Department of Biology Community Service Team. She emphasized that waste management education needs to be delivered directly to communities so that behavioral changes can begin at the smallest level: the household.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWaste management cannot rely solely on the government or sanitation workers. Change can begin in every household through simple habits, such as reducing the use of single-use products, reusing items that are still in good condition, and sorting waste at its source. We hope this activity will provide practical knowledge that community members can immediately apply in their daily lives,\u201d Dr. Oriza explained.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The event was opened by Dr. Windri Handayani, Head of the Department of Biology at FMIPA UI, together with Prof. Anom Bowolaksono, Ph.D., Vice Dean for Education, Research, and Student Affairs at FMIPA UI; representatives of the Depok City Government; and Totok Tugas Utomo, Head of RW 03, Sukmajaya Subdistrict. Agus Setiawan, S.E., from the Depok City Environmental and Forestry Agency, also attended the event.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A total of 19 residents of RW 03 participated in the interactive program, which featured educational sessions, discussions, and practical activities on household waste management. During the discussion, participants shared various challenges they faced in their neighborhood. The dialogue provided an opportunity for residents to share their experiences and concerns while strengthening communication among the community, local government, and university in promoting sustainable household waste management.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The participation of various stakeholders highlighted the importance of collaboration among universities, local governments, and communities in addressing environmental issues, particularly household waste management.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Before the presentations began, participants took a pre-test<\/em> to assess their initial knowledge of household waste management, waste sorting, and the implementation of the 3R principles (Reduce, Reuse, Recycle<\/em>).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The activity featured three speakers who delivered complementary presentations on different aspects of waste management. Dr. Dimas Haryo Pradana discussed the application of the 3R (Reduce, Reuse, Recycle<\/em>) principles in household waste management. Prof. Dr. rer. nat. Mufti Petala Patria, M.Sc., presented Black Soldier Fly<\/em> (BSF) maggot cultivation as an alternative method for processing organic waste into economically valuable frass, known as kasgot. Meanwhile, Prof. Wellyzar Sjamsuridzal, Ph.D., explained how decomposer microorganisms can be used to transform organic waste into compost to support sustainable urban agriculture.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Following the presentations, participants took part in hands-on waste sorting and compost-making activities guided by Prof. Wellyzar Sjamsuridzal, Ph.D., and the team. They learned to identify different types of waste, sort them appropriately, and determine suitable processing methods so that waste could be reused and turned into useful products. This practical involvement was an important step in building an understanding of how waste management can begin at home.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Participants were introduced to four categories of waste: organic waste, such as food scraps and dry leaves; inorganic waste, such as plastic bottles, cans, cardboard, and glass; hazardous and toxic waste (B3), such as used batteries, lamps, and expired medicines; and residual waste, such as diapers, used tissues, and cigarette butts. Understanding these categories is an essential first step toward sorting and handling waste according to its type.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The team also shared practical steps that residents could implement at home, including providing separate containers for organic, inorganic, and residual waste, as well as cleaning used packaging before sending it to a waste bank for recycling. Hazardous and toxic waste should be collected separately for specialized handling, while organic waste can be processed into compost using biopore infiltration holes or composting pots.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In addition to composting, residents were introduced to other ways of utilizing organic waste through Black Soldier Fly<\/em> (BSF) maggot cultivation and biodigesters. Materials such as food scraps, fruit and vegetable waste, and tofu and coconut pulp can potentially be used as maggot feed, provided that their suitability and moisture content are taken into consideration.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Through this educational initiative, residents are expected to incorporate the 3R (Reduce, Reuse, Recycle<\/em>) principles into their daily lives, from reducing waste and reusing items that remain in good condition to recycling materials that can be recovered. These habits are expected to reduce the amount of waste sent to disposal sites while raising public awareness and fostering a cleaner, more sustainable environment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

After all presentations, discussions, and practical sessions had concluded, participants took a post-test<\/em> to evaluate changes in their understanding following the program. The pre-test<\/em> and post-test<\/em> results served as one of the indicators used to assess the extent to which the educational sessions and practical activities had improved participants' knowledge of household waste management.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Department of Biology at FMIPA UI hopes that participants will apply the knowledge and skills they have gained in their daily lives and share them with their families and other community members.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cOur hope is that what participants learn today will not stop with those who attended. We want this knowledge to be shared with family members, neighbors, and the wider community so that more people develop a strong sense of responsibility and good habits in managing waste,\u201d said Dr. Oriza Savitri Ariantie, M.Si., Head of the FMIPA UI Department of Biology Community Service Team.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
