FMIPA UI Graduates First Doctorate in Physics

FMIPA UI graduated the first Doctorate in the Physics postgraduate study program, namely Ilham Prasetyo, at the open session for the promotion of the Physics Doctoral study program which was held online on Saturday (13/11).

Ilham is the first batch of students since the Physics Study Program of FMIPA UI was officially opened in 2017, in 2019, who completed the Doctoral program in just 2.5 years. He was declared to have graduated with Cum Laude predicate with a perfect total GPA of 4.

Ilham's success cannot be separated from the guidance of his promoter, namely Prof. Dr. Anto Sulaksono and Co-Promoter Handhika Satrio Ramadhan, Ph.D.

In front of the examiners, Muhammad Aziz Majidi, Ph.D, Prof. Dr. rer. nat. Terry Mart, Dr. rer. nat. Agus Salam, Dr. Adam Badra Cahaya, Andy Octavian Latief, Ph.D and the Chair of the Session, Prof. Dr. Techn. Djoko Triyono who is the Vice Dean for Education, Research, and Student Affairs of FMIPA UI, Ilham defended his dissertation entitled "Gravity Modification on Compact and Ultracompact Objects".

The man born on December 28, 1992, in his dissertation presented the results of his research on the effects of combining gravity with quantum matter in neutron stars and other compact and ultra-compact objects.

"This is done with the hope that the quantum theory of gravity discovered in the future must be compatible with quantum theory and general relativity in certain areas, just as the general theory of relativity is compatible with Newton's gravity on earth," said Dr. Ilham.

He further explained that although many modified theories of gravity have been disproved by analyses of gravitational waves, there are still many other modified theories that persist.

However, one of the most popular mysteries in astrophysics circles is dark matter. There are several theories of gravity modification that try to explain the formation of the universe as we know it without involving dark matter.

"If possible, I am also interested in getting involved in the area. I do this in order to find out what theory of gravity is suitable for all sizes, from the scale of the neutron star size, to the size of the galaxy, to the size of the universe that is currently visible," he added.

Dr. Djoko Triyono appreciated the graduates of the newest postgraduate study program at FMIPA UI. According to him, Dr. Ilham's achievement is proof that with the experience of managing the Physics S1 program since 1961 and the Physics S2 program since 1990, FMIPA UI has succeeded in organizing a learning program that integrates education and research through a quality research-based curriculum. Physics S2 Program by research This has been held since 2016, while the Physics Doctorate by research since its founding in 2017.

"The achievement of the first graduate of the Physics Doctorate is indeed extraordinary, in addition to the perfect GPA and graduating faster, it also produced 2 articles in reputable international journals that have a high Impact Factor (Q1). This also proves that the postgraduate program by research very good at improving the atmosphere and quality research results "
