FMIPA UI Geosciences Seminar: Bridging Theory and the Professional World Through Certification
Amid increasingly competitive job market conditions, competency certification has become a key factor for geoscience students and graduates to demonstrate their readiness and professional competitiveness. The Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences at Universitas Indonesia (FMIPA UI) emphasizes this through its weekly seminar UI Geosciences Seminar X Starborn Mengajar 2026 which carries the theme “The Role of Competency Certification for Geoscience Students and Graduates”. The seminar was held on Monday, March 30, 2026, at the Prof. Dr. G.A. Siwabessy Auditorium, Building C, FMIPA UI, and was attended by approximately 80 students from the Geology and Geophysics Study Programs. The event was moderated by Twin Hosea Widodo Kristyanto, M.T.
The event opened with remarks from the Head of the Geology Study Program at FMIPA UI, Dr. Reza Syahputra, M.Sc., who emphasized the importance of preparing geoscience graduates to meet industry demands. He stated, “Geoscience students are not only expected to excel theoretically, but must also possess professionally recognized proof of competence. Certification is one of the strategic steps to enhance industry trust in our graduates.”
The seminar featured two speakers: Ir. Asep Angga Kusumah, S.T., M.T., Chair of the Professional Certification Body (LSP) Teknik Katiga Indonesia – Tekatindo, and Ir. Eric Jusuf, S.T., Chair of the Professional Certification Body (LSP) Teknik Tambang Indonesia (TTI). Also in attendance was the Advisory Chair of LSP Tekatindo and TTI, Tb. Edie Trisna Rusmana, S.E., M.M., M.B.

In his presentation, Ir. Asep emphasized that competency certification serves as a bridge between academic theory and industry needs. He explained that certification based on the National Professional Certification Agency (BNSP) and the Indonesian National Work Competency Standards (SKKNI) can serve as proof of graduates’ job readiness, enhance competitiveness, and accelerate adaptation in the professional world.
“With competency certification, students can bridge the gap between the theories learned on campus and the real needs of industry,” he said.
Meanwhile, Ir. Eric presented the profile of the Professional Certification Body (LSP) Teknik Tambang Indonesia as an official certification provider under the National Professional Certification Agency (BNSP). The institution offers various certification schemes in the fields of mining and occupational health and safety (OHS), and plays a role in ensuring that workforce competencies align with industry standards.
“Through standardized certification, the workforce can be more confident that their competencies align with industry needs,” said Ir. Eric.
Through this event, FMIPA UI hopes that geoscience students will gain a deeper understanding of the importance of competency certification as essential preparation for entering a professional and competitive workforce.
Melalui kegiatan ini, FMIPA UI berharap mahasiswa geosains semakin memahami urgensi sertifikasi kompetensi sebagai bekal penting untuk memasuki dunia kerja yang profesional dan kompetitif.
