FMIPA UI Expands Education and Research Partnerships with Leading Australian Universities

Depok, July 24, 2026 — FMIPA UI explored the development of academic and research collaborations with several science faculties at leading universities in Australia during an official Universitas Indonesia visit to Australia from July 11–17, 2026. The visit provided an opportunity for FMIPA UI to expand its international network while discussing more specific collaboration opportunities at the faculty level.

The Dean of FMIPA UI, Prof. Tito Latif Indra, M.Si., and the Vice Dean for Education, Research, and Student Affairs, Prof. Anom Bowolaksono, Ph.D., participated in the UI delegation led by UI Rector, Prof. Heri Hermansyah. During the series of visits, the FMIPA UI leadership held meetings with representatives from the Faculty of Science, University of Melbourne, and the Faculty of Science, University of Sydney.

The meetings discussed various potential areas of collaboration, including academic program development, student and staff exchanges, joint research, joint supervision, and commercialization of research outcomes. These initiatives were explored by considering the alignment of scientific fields and academic programs offered by each faculty.

“Expanding international networks is part of FMIPA UI’s development direction. We see many similarities in scientific fields and research orientations with science faculties in Australia. Therefore, we aim to encourage these meetings to develop into concrete collaborations for lecturers and students,” said Prof. Tito to the FMIPA UI Public Relations team.

With its broad range of scientific disciplines, FMIPA UI shares many areas of expertise with partner universities. These similarities provide opportunities to establish more focused and sustainable collaborations.

During a meeting with the Dean of the Faculty of Science, University of Melbourne, Prof. Moira O’Bryan, accompanied by Associate Dean for Global Engagement, Prof. Willa Huston, FMIPA UI presented the academic profiles of its six departments. The discussion then focused on opportunities to develop International Class Programs (Kelas Khusus Internasional/KKI) through single-degree and double-degree schemes.

“FMIPA UI has experience in implementing International Class Programs (KKI) in the fields of Physics, Chemistry, and Biology. This experience serves as one of the foundations in exploring the development of joint academic programs with international partners,” he stated.

Meanwhile, the meeting with representatives from the Faculty of Science, University of Sydney discussed science faculty management practices, international partnership development, and opportunities for collaboration in research, community engagement, and research commercialization.

The visit by FMIPA UI leadership was part of the UI delegation’s agenda to visit eight universities in Melbourne, Sydney, and Brisbane. In addition to the University of Melbourne and the University of Sydney, the delegation visited Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology (RMIT), Monash University, Deakin University, University of New South Wales (UNSW), University of Queensland (UQ), and Queensland University of Technology (QUT).

During the series of visits, UI signed several collaboration agreements, including a cotutelle agreement with RMIT, a joint degree agreement with Monash University for the Faculty of Engineering and Faculty of Computer Science (FASILKOM), as well as a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Deakin University. UI also signed Student Exchange Agreements with the University of Sydney and UNSW.

In addition, the UI Rector signed an Agreement of Intent with the University of Melbourne focusing on strengthening student exchange collaboration. In Brisbane, the UI delegation also attended the graduation ceremony of B.Art (Psychology) students from the UI–UQ collaborative cohort and explored the signing of an Agreement of Intent with QUT regarding student exchange programs.

For FMIPA UI, strengthening international networks aligns with the faculty’s growing academic and research achievements at the global level. Seven FMIPA UI subject areas were included in the QS World University Rankings by Subject 2026, namely Geography, Mathematics, Physics and Astronomy, Chemistry, Biological Sciences, Environmental Sciences, and Materials Sciences.

This number increased compared with the previous year, which included five subject areas. In the same ranking, UI also became the only university in Indonesia included in all five broad subject areas.

This achievement serves as one of FMIPA UI’s foundations for expanding partnerships with science faculties at leading universities worldwide. With strengths in education and research, as well as experience in developing international academic programs, FMIPA UI hopes that the initiatives explored during the visit can develop into concrete collaborations.

The leaders of the partner universities welcomed the invitation for a reciprocal visit to the FMIPA UI campus in Depok. FMIPA UI hopes that the established engagements can be followed up through concrete and ongoing collaboration programs that benefit both parties.
