FMIPA UI Launches Medical Physicist Professional Study Program to Support National Health System
The Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences at Universitas Indonesia (FMIPA UI) officially launched the Medical Physicist Professional Study Program on Saturday (May 24), in an event held at the Prof. Dr. Ir. Soemantri Brodjonegoro Auditorium. This launch marks a strategic step by FMIPA UI to strengthen its academic and professional role in the health sector, particularly in the safe and effective use of radiation technology.
The event began with an opening speech by Prof. Dr. Supriyanto Ardjo Pawiro, who presented the long history of Medical Physics development at FMIPA UI since the year 2000. In his presentation, Prof. Supriyanto emphasized that the establishment of this professional program is a response to the national need for certified and competent Medical Physicists.
"The establishment of the Medical Physicist Professional Study Program is the result of over two decades of long and consistent work. We believe that the presence of this program will strengthen the national healthcare ecosystem by providing trained, certified experts who are capable of meeting the challenges posed by advancements in modern medical technology."
The Dean of FMIPA UI, Prof. Dede Djuhana, Ph.D., in his speech, expressed his appreciation for the progress made by the Medical Physics group at FMIPA UI. He expressed hope that the launch of this program would become a milestone in FMIPA UI’s contribution to supporting the national healthcare system, particularly in the field of radiation-based health technology.

"We believe that higher education must be able to meet the needs of the times, and today we are proving that FMIPA UI is ready to be a pioneer. Of course, we hope that moving forward, the Medical Physicist Professional Study Program can serve as a model for the development of health professions based on a strong and sustainable foundation in the basic sciences," said Prof. Dede.
The launch of the program was symbolically marked by the striking of a gavel by the Dean of FMIPA UI, signifying the official commencement of the Medical Physicist Professional Study Program at FMIPA UI.
The introductory session was delivered by Dr. Lukmanda Evan Lubis, S.Si., M.Si., F.Med., a lecturer from the Department of Physics at FMIPA UI and the Chairperson of the Indonesian Alliance of Medical Physicists (AFISMI). He highlighted the importance of the Medical Physicist profession in the modern healthcare system and emphasized the need for a structured education and training pathway.
The introductory session was opened by Dr. Lukmanda Evan Lubis, S.Si., M.Si., F.Med., in his capacity as Chairperson of the Indonesian Alliance of Medical Physicists (AFISMI). In his presentation, he emphasized the urgency and strategic role of the Medical Physicist profession within the modern healthcare system, particularly in supporting patient safety and the effectiveness of high-tech therapies such as radiotherapy, medical imaging, and the management of advanced medical equipment. He also highlighted the importance of a structured education and training pathway that meets both national and international standards, in order to produce competent, professional Medical Physicists capable of addressing the rapidly evolving challenges in medical technology.
"The presence of Medical Physicists in the healthcare sector, especially in today’s modern era, is not merely supplementary but a crucial part of ensuring the quality, safety, and effectiveness of medical technology use. Therefore, we need to prepare human resources through targeted and continuous education and training," he stated.

The main session featured national speakers from various strategic institutions. Mukhlisin, S.T., M.Si., Director of Regulation for the Supervision of Radiation Facilities and Radioactive Substances at BAPETEN, highlighted the crucial role of Medical Physicists in ensuring radiation safety. Dr. Akbar Azzi, S.Si., M.Si., F.Med., Head of the Study Program, explained the educational structure and curriculum designed to produce professional and competent graduates. Meanwhile, Wahyu Edy Wibowo, S.Si., M.Si., F.Med., Sp.RT, Chair of the Indonesian Collegium of Medical Physicists, discussed the competency regulation system and the mechanisms for professional competency examinations. From a regulatory standpoint, Indah Lestariningsih, S.Si., M.Si., Chair of the Biomedical Engineering Council at the Indonesian Ministry of Health, explained the Council’s role in the registration and licensing process for Medical Physicists in Indonesia.
The interactive panel discussion that followed the presentations demonstrated the high level of enthusiasm among participants from various institutions and professional backgrounds.
As the event concluded, Prof. Supriyanto Ardjo Pawiro presented certificates of appreciation to all speakers and the moderator as a token of gratitude for their contributions to strengthening the Medical Physicist profession in Indonesia.
